When most of the city is asleep, we’re already out there. Clearing the streets. Hauling tons of waste. Navigating traffic, snowstorms, and heatwaves, day in and day out. We are Local 831, the Uniformed Sanitationmen’s Association, and we are the silent engine behind New York City’s heartbeat.
Representing over 7,000 active sanitation workers and more than 8,000 proud retirees, our union is a force that never stops. Whether it’s a routine day or a historic blizzard, we answer the call. We show up, strong, prepared, and united, to keep this city safe, clean, and running.
But Local 831 isn’t just about trucks, routes, and refuse. It’s about people. It’s about brothers and sisters who stand together, protect one another, and work with a purpose that’s bigger than any one of us. It’s about legacy, the kind built over generations with sweat, sacrifice, and pride.
So, whether you’re a fellow member, a supporter, or a New Yorker wanting to learn more, welcome. This is our official home online, a place to share news, celebrate our people, and continue the story of a union that does the heavy lifting for the greatest city in the world.
“It’s not about ‘me,’ it’s about ‘we.’ We’ll move forward together, not as individuals, but as a united body.”
~ President Dennis Schock
